Perseverance and positive feed-back

While it is positive that the covid-19 vaccines are finally rolling out across the world it may be some time yet before we get back to normal, recognizing the normal may have taken on a new appearance. Sadly the 2021 Alberta Pork Congress and the 2021 Alberta Livestock Expo that we have participated in were postponed for yet another year.

However, we are grateful for the ongoing support and loyalty we have seen throughout the pandemic and have come to appreciate the technological world we live in. Across the miles we conducted a poultry trial with participation from France, Australia and Alberta with great learnings on specific pathogen challenges.

Through another farm trial we also saw refined use of Staldren in one particular broiler barn with split applications

across the 34 days production cycle with great data on cull rates of birds, feed conversion rates and finish weights of the broilers.

Similarly we keep getting positive feed back from Staldren’s use in layer barns, farrowing barns, dairy stalls, calf barns and even with superior odor control in cat litter boxes.

This keeps us positive and enthused about our business motto of “Cleaner, Drier, Fresher Barns”

Covid-19

We truly hope you are all safe and are coping well during these unprecedented times as we battle through the Corona Virus Pandemic. The travel restrictions and social distancing regulations have forced us to restructure our activities. We have had to forego many of the public events that we had registered for and that would have connected us with end users and retailers of Staldren.

We are busy non-the-less staying in touch via electronic means and have just ordered two containers of Staldren to meet Spring client demand. Staldren is being shipped from the Jorenku manufacturing site in Denmark with anticipated arrival late May. There was initially some concern over shipping delays due to a shortage of containers as a result of the global trade disruption from Covid-19. Jorenku has a very good relationship with shipping companies however, as Staldren is distributed throughout the world from Denmark, a situation we have taken advantage of.

Great Staldren feedback from poultry farms

Staldren’s use in poultry farms is extensive throughout the world with Hungary and Brazil two countries that have embraced the production benefits.

In Brazil we are seeing adoption of Staldren in broiler production systems on a very large scale. LAR is the one of largest poultry processors in the world with many farms throughout the country. Footpad lesions were a significant problem in broiler birds. Footpad lesions darken the skin on the chicken feet due to the elevated ammonia levels in the manure pack as it builds up during the production cycle. Footpad lesions were also seen as a welfare issue for the birds.

Chicken feet are a significant export commodity into China for Brazil. Darkened feet are considered a blemish on the end product and need to be discarded. Culled chicken feet product was a problem LAR wanted to address. Alleviating the problem associated with footpad lesions was seen as a positive all round.

Staldren has the ability to maintain the pH of the manure pack close to neutral figures of 7. This results in the nitrogen component in the manure pack maintaining itself in the ammonium form rather than the ammonia form, which under increased pH levels gasses off into the bedding and barn air. The ammonia is what burns the chicken feet causing footpad lesions. Ammonia also reduces barn air quality for bird respiration as well as for staff spending time in the barn.

To address the issue, LAR introduced a cost sharing incentive program with their grower farms to use Staldren as their barn hygiene product and for footpad lesion control. The reduction in blemished feet was noted immediately. The increase in volume of saleable chicken feet for export to China more than offset the cost of Staldren incentive program for LAR.

We have had similar positive feedback from Canadian broiler farms addressing manure pack and footpad lesion issues. With respect to the nitrogen staying in the ammonium form, we have also received feedback from barn staff that upon cleaning the barn after the birds were removed for processing, the air quality was markedly better that previous cleanings due to the lack of ammonia release.

The clear improvements in bird health from reduced footpad lesions compliment lower bird mortality, less days to desired weight and less feed consumption to desired weight.

Staldren has gained a solid foot hold in Canadian poultry production as it has in many other parts of the world.

Danish manufacture

Staldren has been manufactured in Denmark by Jorenku www.jorenku.com/en/staldren for more than 27 years. In this time, there has been no change to Staldrens unique properties for achieving barn hygiene. Staldren has spread around the world and is now available more than 60 countries.

Quality ingredients

The formula combines chalk, talc, iron oxide, sodium plus one of the most effective disinfectants in the industry and across the world, chloramine-T. Together these components make Staldren a versatile, dry disinfectant powder that caters to animals, barn staff and the environment.

High grade Danish chalk is a key component and gives Staldren its silky, soft feel to the skin. The Danish chalk geologically speaking, is an interesting one due its cold, deep sea formation. A gigantic sea covered Denmark millions of years ago. Deep on the ocean floor grew corals. This was a period of relatively cool climate, as opposed to the tropical corrals we are mostly familiar with. The corals formed slowly due to low temperatures and ocean depth. When the sea retreated the surfacing land mass became what is Denmark today. The chalk deposits of the deep, cold sea corals are now accessible in a few prized Danish quarry sites. The extremely pure calcium carbonate compound is highly sought after. Solid agreements are in place to support ongoing access to the chalk for Staldren production.

Broad spectrum disinfectant

Chloramine-T molecule is the disinfectant component of Staldren. In its pure form, Chloramine-T is available as Halamid®. This white powder goes into solution easily and is used in a variety of ways such as; high pressure washing, disinfectant spray, teat dip or water line purification. When combined with high grade Danish chalk and Staldrens’ other components, it makes for an effective dry disinfectant.

Staldren’s components work together to dry, disinfect and bind ammonia all while being safe to handle and apply. Staldren is often applied by hand and has been referred to as “the baby powder of the livestock world”.
